The South Downs National Park is an 84 mile stretch of chalk escarpments, running from Winchester to Eastbourne, dissected by a series of rivers and valleys. The area contains many SSSI sites, as well as nationally rare chalk grassland habitats and numerous scheduled monuments. The Adur valley cuts through the downs at Shoreham, once an important trading route inland to Steyning, which since Norman times has served as a trading, fishing and import hub.
