Located in the northwest Highlands near the town of Fort William and part of the Grampian Mountain range, Ben Nevis is a popular peak that attracts approximately 125,000 hikers annually. This renowned mountain was once an enormous active volcano that erupted and collapsed inwards on itself millions of years ago. The summit bears evidence of an explosion in the form of light-coloured granite. The name Ben Nevis has two translations from the ancient Gaelic language, signifying either ‘mountain with its head in the clouds’ due to its iconic mist-covered peak or ‘venomous mountain’.
