Located at a height of 472m (1,549ft) above sea level in the Pennine hills, Blackstone Edge is a gritstone escarpment that lies on the border of Greater Manchester and West Yorkshire, surrounded by moorland. The Blackstone Edge Long Causeway, also called the Blackstone Edge Roman Road, traverses the escarpment. On the Greater Manchester side, the road is partially paved, while on the Yorkshire side, it becomes a holloway through peat. Originally believed to be of Roman origin, the Blackstone Edge Long Causeway was later discovered by James Maxim to be a turnpike or packhorse route dating back to 1735. Alongside the road stands the Aiggin Stone, a gritstone pillar that may have served as a way-marker and marks the county boundary. The stone has a cross and the letters I and T carved into it. Its name is said to come from the French words ‘aiguille’ meaning needle or ‘aigle’ meaning eagle.
