Aira Beck feeds the waterfall, which drops 20 meters down a steep ravine called Aira Force before flowing into Ullswater.
The name of the river, Aira, comes from the Old Norse words eyrr, meaning gravel bank, and á, meaning river. This refers to Aira Point, a spot where the river meets Ullswater. The word fors, which means waterfall in Old Norse, has been incorporated into multiple northern English dialects and is commonly used to describe waterfalls, spelled in English as ‘Force’. Therefore, Aira can be translated as “the waterfall on the river by the gravel bank“.
Our journey starts at the shores of Ullswater, which is the second largest lake in England. We’ll move upstream through the verdant green woodlands that run along the banks of Aira ghyll. The tranquil atmosphere will soon give way to the thundering sound of Aira Force. After we take a break to admire the stunning view, we will continue our hike up the open fell to reach the summit of Gowbarrow. From there, you’ll get an expansive view of the Ullswater valley.
