Pen-y-Ghent (roughly translated as Hill on the Border) is the lowest of the three Yorkshire Peaks but, at 694m, provides commanding views over Horton-in-Ribblesdale and the surrounding area. It is made up of a millstone grit top over a bed of carboniferous limestone and, due to topsoil loss over the years, has an impressive tiered profile.
We will leave the village in an easterly direction and approach the summit from the south, which will give us the opportunity to get hands on rock at the scramble section. We can then have our lunch with a view from the summit if weather permits, where we can point out some of the local geological features and caves. We will then descend westerly via the Pennine Way before picking up A Pennine Journey for our return to the village.
