Cheddar Gorge is a breathtaking landmark in Britain, recognized as both an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB) and a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI). Stretching 3 miles in length and 400 feet in depth, it is the country’s largest gorge and boasts of sheer cliffs, pinnacles, and an extensive network of underground caves nestled in the Mendip Hills. The gorge is composed of limestone and is also home to the remains of Cheddar Man, Britain’s oldest complete human skeleton, discovered in 1903 and estimated to be around 9,000 years old. Additionally, older remains from the Upper Late Palaeolithic era have also been discovered in the area.

Discover breathtaking views of the Somerset Levels as you embark on a stunning walk through Cheddar Gorge. This moderate hike involves an ascent of approximately 291 meters and includes exploring the Gorge, discovering the Roman Fort remains near Charterhouse, and reaching the 325-meter summit of Beacon Batch in the open-access land of Black Down.
