Haytor is perhaps Dartmoor’s most iconic tor. The tor, like other tors on Dartmoor are made of granite rock – an igneous rock containing quartz, feldspar and mica. The sharp edges make Haytor a popular climbing spot but there’s also steps calved into the granite for the hiker to ascend if they dare. At 457 meters above sea level, on a clear day, the views from Haytor are outstanding.

We will set off from the car park and join the Templer Way briefly before entering the disused Haytor Quarries. There is still the odd piece of rusty mining equipment and some ponds, although we wouldn’t recommend swimming – they’re known for having leaches in! We then ascend the hill to Haytor. After taking in the views we head to Saddletor before crossing the road at Hemsworthy Gate to Top tor and Pil Tor before circling back round to see a different perspective of Haytor and rejoining the Templer Way.
